Texts Into Films: The Tom Milne Popular Fiction Archive 2012 Exhibition

Special Collections, Lancaster University Library

The late Tom Milne was a highly regarded film critic who joined the British Film Institute as an associate editor. His collection was recently donated to the University Library by Nigel Algar, Senior Curator (Fiction) of the British Film Institute. The exhibition showcases novels from the Tom Milne Archive, focusing on the influence of American crime fiction on film noir and neo-noir. Further information here.

Nigel Algar will be talking about his personal reflections of Tom Milne as a critic and collector on Wednesday 18^th January at 2pm in Training Room 3, Human Resources building. Please contact l.tripp@lancaster.ac.uk if you would like to attend.

The Milne Archive has been funded by a generous donation from the Lancaster University Friends Programme.

Web of Knowledge Service Maintenance on Sunday 18 December

Thomson Reuters advise that they will be performing maintenance to Web of Knowledge, EndNote Web and ResearcherID this Sunday, 18 December, 2011 beginning at 14:00 GMT.

The maintenance is expected to last approximately 12 hours. During this time, there may be disruption of service and product access, including Web of Knowledge Personalization. Apologies for any inconvenience this might cause.

Heating

Essential heating maintenance 19-23 December

Essential heating maintenance across the whole campus will take place on Monday 19 – 23 December.

In order to carry out this work, the water temperatures will be turned down during the day which will mean lower temperatures in all buildings.

The work has been delayed until the last week before the holiday to cause minimum disruption to staff and students.

High Demand – Michaelmas Vacation

Which items can be borrowed for the vacation?

All 24 hour loan books (i.e. books with a green date label) can be borrowed for the vacation. Please note that 24 hour loan media items will continue to be issued for 24 hours only (this will be extended to allow for weekend and Christmas closures).

How many items can be borrowed?

Two 24 hour loan items per person.

When can they be borrowed?

From 8.00 am on Friday 16^th December 2011.

When are they due for return?

Monday 16^th January 2012 (any time before 23.45pm).

24 hour loan media items will be due 24 hours after they are issued (this will be extended to allow for weekend and Christmas closures).

Will they be recalled during the vacation?

No.

What about bookable loan items?

These items will remain subject to normal High Demand rules throughout the vacation. However, from 10am Friday 23^rd December 2011 bookable loan items will be due for return by 10am on Tuesday 3^rd January 2012.

Access to IEEE and American Physical Society publications

Many members of Lancaster University Library have had their work disrupted by the withdrawal of access to IEEE and temporary loss of the American Physical Society journals collection.

The publishers have suspended our accounts because of illegal automated downloading from their services. This has been traced to Lancaster University and so everyone has lost access.

All members of the University should be aware that this sort of automated downloading contravenes the University’s Computer User Agreement http://www.lancs.ac.uk/iss/governance/rules/and is in breach of our licences. The University regards such activity as a serious disciplinary offence and ISS investigates thoroughly and effectively. At least one person has already been referred to the Dean for disciplinary action.

We have asked the publishers of IEEE to restore our access, and we hope that this will happen soon.

Update (Nov. 3rd 2011): Access to the IEEE has now been restored.
