To increase the availability of Library materials, Saturdays and Sundays will now be treated as standard days for the purposes of issuing, returning and recalling books. So if you borrow an item on a Saturday, for example, it will be due for return on a Saturday. If you recall a book from somebody else on a Saturday, they will be asked to return it by the following Saturday, rather than you having to wait for more than a week.
One implication of this is that fines will also accrue for late return at weekends. Remember that you can issue and return books on the self-service machines throughout Library opening hours, and you can renew books 24/7 online provided they haven’t been recalled. How about actually making Sunday a normal day in the library? Closing short loan over the weekends is ridiculous. All the necessary and sought-after books in the library are placed into short loan… and then locked up on a Sunday. It would decrease demand if we were able to access them every day and actually get our work done over the weekend,
